    1. Impressive achievement of a book given the scope of score study needed as well as the time spent pouring over hundreds of recordings of the works analyzed in the text. Although I didn't like how much venom he spit at virtually every conductor in the business, I agree with his approach whole-heartedly: that as a conductor, your role is to analyze the score so thoroughly that you are "realizing" the composer's intentions, rather than "interpreting" it to your personal whims. He made me feel very i [...]

    2. Gunther Schuller is unyieldingly opinionated in a wonderful way. A master for a reason, he relentlessly worships the score and rightly so. I read this as a supplement to my conducting lessons and it really pushed me to look into every detail outlined by the composer in a score. He made me think of Beethoven 5 and 7 in a whole new light. Definitely worth a critical read!
